What is a CMS?
Create your own content
A website based on a Content Management System is one that uses a web application to manage the pages of your web site. The CMS application runs in your Internet Explorer (5.0+) web browser and allows you to edit your website from anywhere that you can access a web browser - that huge web benefit of "Any time, Any place"
No more uploading and downloading files.
Now you can manage your website from anywhere! There is nothing to download or install. Whats more, you can allow as many content editors as you like to help you with building and extending your web site, no more single, overloaded web page editor!
No experience necessary.
You do not need to know Java, HTML, XML, Scripting, ASP, or CSS. You only need to know how to use a word processor. With a CMS system your website menu is created for you, automatically.
If you do have HTML development experience, a CMS is no limitation. You can enter HTML direct if you wish to achieve special effects. Or you can copy complex HTML code directly into place.
Change the look of your website with ease
CMS websites use page templates to define how the web site should look. You may have several for different purposes on one site, but they will all be basically similar, creating a comfortable, easily created common look and feel for your web site visitors.
A set of page templates is supplied as source code get you started, and this may be extensively edited - even from within the site itself! The template code is current standard HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and significant customisation is possible through CSS changes. Several variations are supplied to provide a multi-panel home page, a "standard" page, a News page, Image Gallery and Web Shop facilities which include payment through Paypal or SagePay (formerly ProtX).
If you already have a website but would like these CMS benefits, talk to us about how we could turn this into a custom template. Our Electos "engine" has been designed to make it possible to add it to existing web page designs, or to any of the many web page templates available from specialist Internet template suppliers, many of which are downloadable at no charge. If you know about cascading style sheets (CSS) and Active Server Pages (ASP) then you would find it easy to do this for yourself, possibly using Web page design tools you may already be familiar with. Alternatively, we welcome enquiries for such website design and building work.
Content vs Context
CMS work by storing your website content (the text and pictures) in a database and moving this dynamically into the the appropriate page template (Home page, News page, Image Gallery, etc.) when a page is requested from the automatically generated menu system. So if you change the template, you change the entire look of your website in a few easy steps. Also you wont need to worry about breaking page links or re-entering your content when the time comes to reorganise your web site. A CMS should keep track of all your pages, the links between them, all your image and download files, and the links from the web pages to these.
Dynamic content Management
Management means more than just helping with building web pages. Electos gives you web page scheduling. No more out-of-date content. Weve all seen websites which reference an upcoming holiday that was a week ago, or a training course that was redundant long ago! With the Electos CMS you can create your time critical web pages in advance and schedule when they will become active and inactive. When a page becomes active, it is automatically put on the menu and it comes off the menu when it is time to deactivate the page. Keeping your website up-to-date couldnt be easier!
Members Only!
If you would like to restrict access to certain parts of your websites, you can use the log-in feature. To access restricted web pages or download files, users will be required to log in with a valid user name and password. You can create create Groups to allow different users access to different parts of your web site..
The Electos CMS
We use, recommend and provide specific hosting facilities for the Electos content management system. Not all website CMS offer all of the above features, and their ease of use varies hugely. Electos provides all of the above, and more. Above all, it is easy to use, especially by the non expert web page designer.
